Happy New Year to you and yours from the Dream Team at the Downtown Independent,

We hope you had a safe one.  The Herzog double feature is going strong and ringing us is in proper.  I have yet to see “My Son, My Son”, but I did see “Bad Lieutenant” and it is every bit as wacky, wild and weird as only Cage/Herzog could deliver.  Come by and watch both for only $10 until the 7th.

P.S.  Sorry to those folks in the front row for throwing out your bottled waters…I’m not used to the double feature format.  🙂  But I got you new ones anyways so you got that going for you.

Everything coming up in January looks fun – super stoked for the next Brainfeeders….

Do yourself a favor and make ‘010 better than ’09 with us at the Downtown Indie where we support the unsupported.

December 9, 2009

Hmmm lets see…

What else …more Brutal Cinema, Brainfeeders Sessions, Holy F*ck and Mindshare all this month and of course the premier of Lynch/Herzog’s My Son, My Son… which is gonna be uber sexy!

TANGO DOWN!!

The new Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is amazing and Gus and I want to play it in the theater / have a LAN party…is anybody with us?

Tom Waits wrote the best song about working that I sing to myself when I’m doing dishes, sweeping, etc…

“Well I can’t wait to get off work an see my baby, said she’d leave the porchlight on for me….Tom do this…Tom do that….Tooom don’t do that…I can’t wait to get off work and see my baby, she’ll be waiting up with a magazine for me…clean the bathrooms and clean em good, for your lovin, I wish you would some down here and sweep a me off my feet – this broom will have to be my baby, if I hurry I just might get off before the dawn’s early light.”

Cheers

We love Chloe Sevigny.

Chloe, you’re in a short film in this festival. When will you arrive? Will we have to wait to see you when we have the premiere of Werner Herzog’s My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done on December 18th?

Oh, well. In the meantime, Chloe, we will go on without you – with tonight’s awesome lineup and our open bar from 7-8 tonight – we will be busy and will probably not have the time to think about you.

ZERO9 FILM FEST

December 4, 2009

This guy rules almost as hard as ZERO9 rules.

Day 1 of ZERO film fest at the Downtown Independent: We had a great crowd tonight. Later, we saw the awesome guy posted above at the theater. Truly independent films like those featured in the ZERO film fest rule. Free PBR rules. This blog is going to rule. That’s all I got.

You Will Never Be a Woman

Beyond Drag Part Deux

This is my first blog post. Not just for The Downtown Independent Employee Blog, but the first blog post of my life. So, go easy on me. People think I have a heart of stone, but I’m actually quite sensitive.

Last night I was lucky enough to see several of the shorts presented in Ultra Fabulous – Beyond Drag Part Deux. Thanks, Vivian (Our house manager) for letting me watch! Beyond Drag describes itself as, ” a celebration of gender identification – featuring androgynes, the transgendered, drag queens and tranimals…” So how could Viv not let me watch the shorts? I mean, these are my people.

I missed the first few because, you know, I was working, but I came in during Chico’s Angels, which was fabulous. My favorite of the night was Zachary Drucker’s You Will Never Be a Woman… or maybe it was called Two People Who Identify as Transgendered in Bed. I’m not sure! This computer at work won’t let me download videos from Zachary’s website. I’ll have to wait ’til I get off.

Following the shorts was a fabulous Q and A moderated by Drag Superstar Jackie Beat (who also had a great short in the night that you can view on her website here.) and featuring Calpernia Addams, Buck Angel and Zackary Drucker. True story: Once at Shits and Giggles (Back when it was still our neighbor at 740) Jackie Beat said to me, “Honey, you look like you just got out of bed.” The truth is, I had.

Anyway, gotta make popcorn so to wrap up –  But thanks to Austin Young and Saskia Wilson-Brown for arranging such a fabulous night and bringing out the Trans and gay community to the Independent. Please come back and keep us company sometime!

I clasp your hands,

Nedjelko Spaich one of the Downtown Indie Usher Dream Team
